- In 1947, a marker designating the start of the Jefferson Davis Highway in Virginia was dedicated at the 14th Street Bridge.

- In 2020, after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the Fredericksburg Auction Block was removed from the corner of William and Charles streets where the block had been installed in 1843.

- in 1774 the Prince William Resolves were passed in Dumfries, stating "no person ought to be taxed but by his own consent, expressed either by himself or his Representatives..."
- In 1944, 30 men from the town of Bedford in Company A, 116th Infantry, 29th Infantry Division landed on Omaha Beach in the D-Day invasion of Europe, and 19 of the Bedford Boys died that day.
- In 1950, lightning struck a signal tower, causing two trains to collide with 11 people injured.

- The American Cyanamid Company closed its titanium dioxide production plant in 1971 and moved from Nelson County to Savannah, Georgia, soon forcing closure of the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway.

- In 1983, Arlington County adopted a logo which prminently displayed the columns of the mansion in which Robert E. Lee lived, where the Arlington Memorial Cemetery was created during the Civil War.

- Hurricane Agnes dawdled over the Blue Ridge and dropped almost 12 inches of rain in 24 hours at Dulles Airport, creating 100-year floods in the Piedmont (especially James-Potomac River watersheds). Downtown Richmond experienced record flood, requiring the National Guard to patrol the Shockoe Slip area.
