In 1637, the burgesses in the Grand Assembly divided New Norfolk County into Upper Norfolk County and Lower Norfolk County.

Upper Norfolk County was renamed >Nansemond County in 1646. Nansemond County has also "disappeared" and is now incorporated into the City of Suffolk.1
