When Francis Lightfoot Lee married Rebecca Tayloe on May 25, 1769, her father was the wealthy planter John Tayloe II. He gave the new couple 1,000 acres of land and 20 enslaved workers, and funded construction of a new house.

Tayloe had just built Mount Airy nearby, to replace lived in the plantation house at Menokin. Nearby lived the enslaved workers. Today the Menokin Foundation, whch owns the historic site, is tellling the story of both communities.

The mansion house was damaged when a tree fell on it in the 1960's. About 80% of the original materials remain.
