Wilderness in Virginia

Virginia has over 215,000 acres officially designated as wilderness under the Wilderness Act of 1964. Nationwide, there are more than 800 units in the National Wilderness Preservation System managed by four Federal agencies - National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and US Forest Service.
In Virginia, 23 out of 24 wildeness areas are managed by the US Forest Service. The 79,579-acre Shenandoah Wilderness is managed by the National Park Service.1
The 1964 law states:2
- ...these shall be administered for the use and enjoyment of the American people in such manner as will leave them unimpaired for future use and enjoyment as wilderness, and so as to provide for the protection of these areas, the preservation of their wilderness character, and for the gathering and dissemination of information regarding their use and enjoyment as wilderness...
