What technology will be required?
The emphasis is on Virginia geography, not learning how to use computers or new media. The technology is used as a tool to distribute the information in a convenient way, allowing you to choose the time to listen and to participate in class discussions. You get to avoid the parking problems on campus, and you don't need to "dress for success," but that requires using some distance learning technology.
For this class you'll need, in addition to an interest in Virginia geography:
- the ability to browse the Web, using a modern browser (Mozilla Firefox 2.0, Internet Explorer 7.0, etc.). Access to the Internet is available from libraries, GMU computer centers, and the Johnson Center on the Fairfax Campus. Maps, graphics, and photos will be presented in standard GIF and JPG formats, but some (such as Library of Congress historical maps) may require browswer plug-ins. Your browser will also need to handle PDF files (normally viewed with Acrobat Reader), plus a few audio/video files (normally viewed with Windows Media Player or RealPlayer), and Macromedia Shockwave and Flash files. They may be slow to download; be patient. Waiting for pages to appear on the monitor is the tradeoff for not having to commute to class.
- a VCR for viewing videotapes (in the standard VHS format), or access to a Northern Virginia cable channel carrying GMU-TV. Copies of videotapes may also be checked out on 2-hour reserve and viewed on the VCR's at the GMU Johnson Center or Prince William libraries, or purchased for about $25 (for the entire class) from the Student Technology Assistance and Resource (STAR) center at GMU. (Next version of the videos will be on DVD, but not the current set.)
- the ability to send and receive e-mail at your official GMU e-mail address. E-Mail participation facilitates regular contact outside of class hours, and may be helpful for those of you who are normally shy about raising questions in person. Take advantage of the computer labs if you have a technology disaster at home. [NOTE: Text messaging, iPods, and many other tools you may use in everyday life are not required for this class.]
The faster the Internet connection, the better. Some of the images and maps, and many of the files in PDF format, will download slo-o-o-owly. If you are reluctant to revisit a page in order to answer questions on the quizzes/exam, consider finding a friend or a library with broadband access.
- Need technical assistance? Check out the ITU Support Center for computer, network, and phone problems.
- Need help with geography? Old-fashioned, face-to-face communications or phone calls with the instructor are encouraged. Registered students may contact me and discuss class topics in person, at a mutually-convenient location and time.
