Contacting the Instructor
The class is "distance learning," but I'm not hiding in a secure undisclosed location. I'm certainly willing to discuss in person (as well as by phone or via e-mail) your questions and comments regarding Virginia geography. Even if you're in Richmond or Blacksburg, we may be able to have "office hours" in your area. We can meet on any GMU campus and in several cities within Virginia. I'm available throughout the semester, as well as at the start.
If you are in the Fairfax (Virginia) area, there will be OPTIONAL class meetings throughout the semester. Come by to introduce yourself, meet the instructor in person, ask questions, and talk about Virginia.
There is no requirement to come to any in-person meeting or to physically travel to any GMU campus for this class. We have students living outside the local area, and the class schedule and deadlines for assignments are online. Most students do well in this class without ever seeing the instructor in person.
However, personal contact is valued. If you're not in the Northern Virginia area... I might still be in your neighborhood this fall. Contact me, and we'll see if there's a mutually-convenient time and place to meet. I'll be travelling around the state, and it just might be to a coffee shop/historic site/state park near you.
- E-mail:
- The most effective way to contact me is to send email to
(Remember, the grade for e-mail participation is designed to encourage interaction, even though you may not come to a classroom in person each week.)
- Office hours:
- Please contact me to determine a mutually-convenient time and place, at any of the three GMU Campuses or elsewhere during the semester. I do not have a dedicated office on campus, so typically I meet students at the information desk in the Johnson Center on the Fairfax Campus.
- Phone/Fax:
- The Geography Department number is (703) 993-1210. However, I'm never there - and I'm on e-mail almost every day, so contact me via e-mail.
- Postal Mail/Delivery Services:
- You can reach me through the main office:
- Charles Grymes
- Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science
- Research 1, Room 329
- George Mason University
- 4400 University Avenue MS6C3
- Fairfax, Virginia 22030-4444

Contacting Other Students
Class discussion and interaction will be rewarded through up to 150 points on the final grade. I will moderate messages on the listserver, forwarding some each week so you see what each other is doing or what is confusing to other students. In scheduling your Fall semester commitments, build in time each week for the e-mail assignments.
Each week, send me an e-mail and report on your experience with the course exercises for that week. Also send messages to ask questions about Virginia, and to suggest answers to questions distributed via the listserver - just as you would invest time in a routine class for discussion in person.
You might be able to arrange to meet other students in person - anything is possible. I moderate the messages and usually do not identify students except by first names. However, if you are willing to share your e-mail address or phone number, then you can invite other members of the class to contact you directly and make off-line arrangements.
